About Google Messages

Google Messages (also known as Messages or Messages by Google) is a messaging application for SMS and instant messaging, developed by Google. It was launched in 2014 and runs on Android. The official website is messages.google.com.
Google Messages is the default messaging app on many Android phones, handling SMS, MMS, and RCS chats. When something goes wrong, messages may sit unsent, fail to deliver, or arrive late. This page tracks reported problems with the app and its related services, so you can see whether others are affected before you start troubleshooting your own device.
Messages by Google is a messaging application developed by Google. It sends and receives standard text messages, picture messages, and richer RCS chats with read receipts and typing indicators where supported. It runs on Android and has a web companion at messages.google.com for texting from a browser. Common issues include messages stuck as pending, RCS chats falling back to SMS, delayed delivery, or the web client failing to pair with a phone. Network problems on either end, carrier outages, or a stale app session can all look like the app itself is broken. Check a few things first: confirm you have a mobile signal or Wi-Fi calling active, make sure the app is updated, and try toggling chat features off and on in Settings. If only one contact is affected, the problem is likely on their side.

Questions

Is Google Messages down right now?

According to reports on this page, Google Messages looks fine for most people. Isolated failures still happen — report yours if you are stuck.

When was the last mass outage?

We do not have a recorded mass outage for Google Messages yet.

Why are my messages sending as SMS instead of RCS?

RCS needs both you and the contact to have chat features enabled and an active data connection. If either side loses data or chat features were deactivated, the app falls back to SMS for that conversation.

Why can't I connect to Google Messages for Web?

The web client pairs with your phone over the internet, so both ends need a working connection. Reopen the app on your phone, check that Messages is your default texting app, and generate a new pairing code from the Device pairing option.
